Protective Effects of the Calyx of Diospyros kaki on Oxidative Stress in Vascular Endothelial Cell

Abstract
The oxidative stress causes damage to vascular endothelial cells, which is an important mediator in the pathogenesis of hypertension. The antioxidant and antihypertensive activity of the methanol extracts of Diospyros kaki calyx was measured in this study. At concentrations of 2.5, 5, and 10 ¥ìg/mL of the calyx of Diospyros kaki methanol extract, cytotoxicity was not observed, and cell viability was increased compared to EA.hy926 cells treated with H2O2. The methanol extracts of Diospyros kaki calyx significantly inhibit the production of reactive oxygen species. In addition, the extract increased nitric oxide production and showed angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory activity. Our results provided experimental evidence that the methanol extracts of Diospyros kaki calyx exhibit antioxidant activity and antihypertensive activity in vascular endothelial cells.
